Otachi Cave in Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture

Origin of the Otachi Cave in Takahata Town

The Datate Cave, located in Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture, is an impressive cave in the middle of the mountain. This place has been inhabited since the Jomon period and is rich in history!

There are large rocks stacked on top of each other, and there is enough space underneath to bend down and enter. The cave is covered with sediment, but it is believed to have been much larger in the past.

There are some stone towers inside, but I don’t know what they were used for.

The path from the entrance to the cave

It takes about five minutes to walk from the entrance to the cave.(The signboard says 2 minutes, but it takes about this long if you climb slowly up the hill.)

The path to the cave has narrow places and steep slopes! There are no handrails along the way, so please be careful on the slopes.

At the bottom entrance, there is a sign with a picture on it. So this is how they used to live, in this place.

Several other caves have been found in the vicinity, and there seems to have been traffic between them.
